How many CPD hours do dental nurses need?

Dental nurses must complete continuing professional development (CPD) over a five‑year cycle.

You need a minimum of 50 hours of verifiable CPD in total, with at least 10 hours completed in any two‑year period.

The General Dental Council (GDC) also strongly recommends completing CPD in key core areas that support patient safety and reflect the role of dental nurses in practice:

• Medical emergencies – at least 10 hours per cycle
• Radiography and radiation protection – at least 5 hours per cycle
• Disinfection and decontamination – at least 5 hours per cycle

Build CPD into your routine

Completing CPD regularly across the cycle helps reduce pressure and supports ongoing professional development.
