Julia Frew - Chair

Julia has a degree in law and worked as an in-house solicitor for fifteen years, first for ICI PLC and then Unigate PLC, advising on business, employment and litigation matters. She then moved on to become involved in legal education and has worked at a number of Universities, teaching mainly on the Legal Practice Course, which is the vocational course for trainee solicitors, and also on a number of different LLB courses.

Latterly she was part of the executive management team at the University of Law, based in Manchester,  responsible for the tutors and the  day to day operation of the Centre. She also taught  at the Open University and was for a number of years a Lead External Examiner at several Universities, appointed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

She retired from full time employment in 2015 but continues to hold an External Examiner appointment at Birmingham City University and has also taken up an appointment as a school governor.

The areas of Julia’s experience which are relevant to her role as a trustee for the NEBDN include the analytical and problem solving skills required from a lawyer working in a business context, hands-on involvement in vocational training and the ability to dispassionately appraise institutional examining systems gained from her experience as an independent external examiner in a variety of educational providers.

Julia was appointed Chair of NEBDN in Sept 2017.
