Barry Mitchell Biog
Professor Barry Mitchell is Emeritus Professor of Healthcare Sciences at De Montfort University, Leicester (DMU). Barry was also Dean of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at DMU and member of the University Executive Board.
Prior to this he was Head of Anatomy in the Medical School at the University of Southampton, where he was a Sub Dean for admissions and student progress. Previously he taught anatomy at St George’s, University of London, and at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic (AECC) where he led anatomy.
He has taught a wide range of healthcare professionals at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as part time students in the Open University. He is currently Honorary Professor of Anatomy at the Medical School, University of Buckingham.
He has been a non-executive Director of the Anatomical Society, a trustee of the cancer charity Hope, and a member of the Court of Examiners, Royal College of Surgeons, London.
He has been external examiner in undergraduate anatomy, and for PhD, MPhil, MD and Prof Doc degrees. He has published widely in anatomy research and in medical education and has written a number of anatomy textbooks. He has experience of regulation of health and social care education programmes, both as Dean, during accreditation visits to DMU, and more recently as a member of the education committee of the General Chiropractic Council, where he also chairs visit panels for approval of undergraduate programmes. He is also a Lay Chair of the education visiting panels of the General Optical Council.
